Fluid Coupling Scoop Actuator for a Plasterboard Mill

Vibration-proof scoop control

A building materials producer drives a mill through a scoop-controlled fluid coupling. The position of the scoop tube sets how much oil is in the coupling’s working circuit, and so the speed of the mill, which makes the scoop actuator a critical part of the drive.

The scoop actuator supplied with the fluid coupling could not cope with the heavy vibration on the mill and failed repeatedly.

The Solution

A Beck 11-159 electric actuator was supplied for the scoop control, together with the design for a rigid mounting plinth to isolate it from the worst of the vibration and give a stable base for the linkage to the scoop lever.

Installation and commissioning were completed in one morning, and the drive has run with no problems since.

AfterBeck 11-159 scoop actuator on its new mounting plinth beside the fluid coupling
Beck actuator crank arm and linkage to a fluid coupling scoop lever
AfterLinkage from the actuator crank arm to the coupling scoop lever

The Results

IPT supports both sides of this kind of drive: electric actuators for scoop and damper control, and fluid coupling spares and support. See how fluid couplings work for more on scoop control.
