Fluidrive fluid couplings have been fitted to conveyors, crushers, mills, fans and many other drives for decades, and a large number are still in service. IPT Engineering supplies spares and technical support for Fluidrive FCU, SCR and SFU couplings, and for the Vulcan Sinclair and Pembril couplings that share the same design heritage.

How an FCU Coupling Is Built

Knowing the main assemblies makes it easier to identify the part you need. The FCU is a fixed-fill traction coupling, made in a range of sizes covering small drives up to more than 1 MW.

Input: a driving boss and a flexible steel diaphragm driving plate, with a spherical centre spigot to keep the coupling running true
Fluid coupling: an aluminium alloy impeller, runner and casing, with the runner shaft carried on roller and ball bearings and sealed by a lip seal
Output: a semi-flexible multi-disc coupling between the runner shaft and the output half coupling
Protection: a fusible plug on all but the smallest sizes

Flexible at both the input and the output, the coupling behaves like a short cardan shaft. It tolerates small misalignment and shares its weight between the driving and driven shafts, so both need to be properly supported.

Identifying Your Coupling

Where to find the contract and serial number

For most spares, the coupling's contract and serial number is the quickest way for us to identify it and the parts it needs. You will find it here:

FCU: hard stamped into the casing, on the periphery either side of the casing joint
SFU: usually engraved on the output side gland assembly
SCR: engraved on the plate at the back of the tundish oil filling assembly

For driving plate kits and fusible plugs, the coupling size and type is usually enough. Also send us, if you can:

The coupling size and type, for example 10.5 FCU
Photographs of the coupling, the nameplate and the worn part
Dimensions of the part, such as the outside and inside diameter, thickness and hole positions of a driving plate or multi disc
Whether the drive is a surface or underground application
