Bespoke Rotary Airlock Replacement for a Steel Works

A non-standard unit, replaced without modifying the plant

A steel works approached IPT Engineering about a rotary airlock that was badly worn. The rotor was failing and the shaft seals were leaking, so the unit had to be replaced.

Replacing it was not straightforward. The original airlock was a non-standard size, and no off-the-shelf rotary valve would fit without modification. Altering the connecting chutes to take a standard-size unit was not practical, so the steel works needed a replacement made to fit the existing installation.

Finding the Right Solution

IPT worked with the steel works to define the replacement. It had to match the existing dimensions and connections exactly, and it was an opportunity to deal with some of the maintenance problems of the original design.

From the first discussions to the order, the project took about nine months. That time allowed the requirements to be fully established and the replacement design to be agreed before the order was placed.

The Solution

A bespoke airlock built to the plant's dimensions

IPT sourced a bespoke rotary airlock manufactured to the exact specification and dimensions required, so it could be installed without modifying the connecting chutes.

Rather than simply copying the original, the new unit includes several upgrades. The most important is a modified shaft sealing arrangement, designed to make future maintenance easier and quicker: leaking shaft seals had been one of the main problems with the old unit.

The Result

The steel works received a replacement rotary airlock designed specifically for its existing installation:

Rather than adapting the plant to suit a standard product, IPT sourced a purpose-built replacement that fitted the plant.

Why This Matters

Non-standard does not have to mean modifying the plant

Industrial equipment is not always built to today's standard dimensions. Older and specialist installations often contain components that are no longer made as standard products. When they fail, choosing the nearest modern equivalent can mean extra engineering work, installation problems and further cost.

IPT Engineering investigates these situations and sources bespoke, specially manufactured or alternative replacements where a standard catalogue product is not suitable. If a component has failed or is becoming difficult to maintain, send us the details and we will look for a practical replacement.
